How to track a stolen car in Tanzania

A car thief's first moves are predictable: lift the car onto a truck with the engine off, or disconnect the tracker's power. Trakora watches for both — a tracker_tow_move alert when the car shifts with ignition off, a tracker_power_cut alert when power is pulled — and can cut the engine remotely.

The theft playbook

The two moves, and the one answer

A modern car thief does not hot-wire and drive. They lift the car engine-off so a running-engine alarm never fires, or they kill the tracker's power. Each has its own shipped rule — and the engine cut is the move you make back.

tracker_tow_move

The car moved with the engine off — it was lifted or pushed

What fires it

The car's position changes while the ignition reads off. On a flatbed, a hook truck or a hard push, the car is moving but not being driven — the signature of a professional lift.

What the owner sees

A tow-move alert with the live position, pushed to SMS, WhatsApp and push at once — the difference between hearing at dawn and hearing in the first minute.

What they do next

Follow the live track, call the police with a location instead of a description, and, if the car is stationary and safe, authorise the engine cut.

tracker_power_cut

The tracker's main power was disconnected

What fires it

The device loses its main supply — the standard first move of a competent thief who knows a tracker is fitted and wants it blind before the car moves.

What the owner sees

A power-cut alert sent the moment the supply drops, carrying the last known position before the device fell back to its own reserve.

What they do next

Treat a power cut as theft in progress, not a fault. Act on the last position immediately, because the window on reserve power is short.

anti-theft-immobiliser

Cut the engine remotely — the move you make back

What it does

An authorised command tells the fitted relay to inhibit the engine, emitting tracker.immobilized. Lifting the inhibit emits tracker.restored, so both actions are on the record.

When to use it

Only when the car is stationary and it is safe to stop it — never on a moving vehicle. It is a way to end a theft, not to punish a driver.

What it depends on

The immobiliser relay must be wired at installation. Without that wiring the alerts still fire, but the remote engine cut is not available.

On a fleet, the same movement-with-ignition-off signature is the ignition_off_moving rule and is treated as a safety and theft signal across many trucks at once. On a single owned car, tow-move is the version framed for you.

Workflow

From fitted to protected

Four steps from installation to the moment an alert saves the car.

  1. Fit the tracker

An installer wires the device, and — if you want the active defence — the immobiliser relay to the engine circuit.

  2. Watch it live

The car appears on your app with live position, trip history and family sharing, on a per-device subscription.

  3. Get the alert

A tow-move or power-cut fires to SMS, WhatsApp and push the instant the thief acts — no waiting for the car to be driven.

  4. Respond

Track live, call the police with a location, and authorise the engine cut only when the car is stationary and it is safe to stop it.

Honest limits

What anti-theft tracking cannot do

What to expect

  • The remote engine cut needs the immobiliser relay wired at installation. Without it the alerts still fire, but there is no active engine cut to command.
  • The engine cut is for a stationary vehicle only. It must never be used on a car in motion, and the tool is designed around that rule, not against it.
  • On a power cut the device runs on a reserve supply whose run time is a figure to be confirmed. The safe assumption is that the window is short — act on the last position at once.
  • Tracking recovers position and evidence; it is not a guarantee of physical recovery. A fast alert and a live location give the police their best chance, but recovery is theirs to make.
  • Every alert depends on GSM and GPS coverage. In a signal shadow fixes buffer and backfill, so a position may arrive with its original timestamp rather than in real time.

Values marked are figures to be confirmed: the backup-battery run time on a power cut and the GPS reporting interval depend on the device model and plan and are not published on this page. No default value is stated as fact.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will I know if my car is towed while the engine is off?

Yes. That is exactly what the tracker_tow_move rule watches for — the car changing position with the ignition off. The alert reaches SMS, WhatsApp and push.

What happens when a thief pulls the tracker's power?

A tracker_power_cut alert fires the moment the main supply drops, with the last known position. Treat it as theft in progress and act on that position immediately.

Can I stop the car remotely?

Yes, if the immobiliser relay was wired at installation. An authorised command cuts the engine — but only ever on a stationary car, never one in motion.

Does the tracker work on motorcycles too?

Yes — the same module covers bodaboda and bajaji. See the motorcycle tracker page for the details specific to two- and three-wheelers.

How much does it cost?

Vehicle tracking is a per-device subscription in TZS. See the vehicle-tracking pricing page for the current plans and what each includes.
